Le roman a sombr dans l'oubli pendant la guerre et par hasard, au dbut des annes 1950, une danseuse germano-russe dcouvrit le livre chez un bouquiniste et en tomba amoureuse. Elle le rapporta en Angleterre et entreprit de le traduire. Quand sa version anglaise fut enfin publie au dbut des annes 1970 (traduite en 1973 chez Robert Laffont), le sujet des amours interethniques tait devenu trs la mode et le livre connut un succs mondial, renforc par l'anonymat de l'auteur.
